more than 70 years of support

Our Heritage

Since our beginnings in 1954, Solden Hill House has believed something that was far ahead of its time—that every person, regardless of disability, has value, potential and the right to live a fulfilling life.

In an era when many people with learning disabilities were separated from their communities and offered few opportunities for education, employment or independence, Solden Hill House chose a different path.

Our organisation was founded on the belief that people should be supported to develop their skills, express their individuality and play an active role in society. That belief continues to shape everything we do today.

Our first residents came from a children's home in Stourbridge. As they reached adulthood, boys and girls were moved into separate homes, with the boys beginning a new chapter at Solden Hill—a former country house that would become much more than a place to live. It became a place where people could learn, grow and belong.

Our founder, Fred Apps, believed passionately that disability should never define a person's future. While many organisations of the time focused primarily on care and protection, Solden Hill House introduced practical workshops, creative arts, gardening and opportunities for meaningful activity—approaches that were pioneering for their time.

As the years passed, generous fundraising and community support transformed the lives of residents. Annual garden parties raised significant funds, new accommodation replaced shared dormitories with private bedrooms, and donations helped create facilities that promoted dignity, independence and opportunity. The construction of Apps House and the arrival of the famous "Sunshine Coach" opened up even more possibilities, enabling residents to enjoy shopping trips, holidays and community life just like everyone else.

Today, more than seven decades later, our commitment remains unchanged. While the way we provide support has evolved, our belief that every individual deserves choice, opportunity, friendship and the chance to live life to the fullest continues to guide everything we do.

Our Trustees

Solden Hill House is proud to be governed by a dedicated Board of Trustees who share a commitment to ensuring the charity continues to provide the highest standards of support for the people who live with us.

Our Trustees bring together a wealth of professional experience, knowledge and expertise, helping to shape the strategic direction of the organisation while ensuring our values remain at the heart of every decision.

Serving in a voluntary capacity, the Board works closely with our senior leadership team to oversee governance, promote good practice and ensure the charity remains focused on delivering outstanding person-centred support.

The Board is chaired by Mark Greaves, with Tom Espley serving as Vice Chair. Together with Catherine Wardlaw and Rashpal Singh, they provide independent oversight and support the continued development of Solden Hill House.
